UEP alumni finally reunite

Africa » Gambia
Monday, May 04, 2009
After six years, ex-student's of the Saint Mary's University extension programme have finally come together to resurrect their defunct alumni association.

Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Saint Mary's University Extension Programme, the ex-students last Saturday converged at the Paradise Suites Hotel to officially commemorate their re-union and chart a new way forward to build a vibrant alumni association.

The occasion was punctuated by an exhibition of books and a documentary film titled "Sufura" featuring rape in Senegal, directed by Mariama Khan, a member of the alumni. The exhibition was aimed at manifesting to the nation, the tremendous contribution of the ex-students of the Saint Mary's University Extension Programme to the advancement of society.

The occasion was a success story but one person who was more than delighted was Professor Buba Misawa. Having lectured the ex-students at the UEP and having been privileged to witness the reunion of the alumni and 10th anniversary of the UEP, Professor Misawa highlighted the importance of a viable alumni association. Dilating on the significant progress registered by The Gambia under the leadership of Professor Jammeh, particularly in the education sector, Professor Misawa advised the ex-students to support President Jammeh's agenda.

He also called on them to establish strong ties with their alma mata, harness their talents for both members and institutional benefits and participate meaningfully in the success of the association. A steering committee, tasked with the mandate of drafting an action plan for the association was also established. Participants reaffirmed their willingness to ensure the survival of the alumni  association and to continue contributing to the development of the society.
