URR disaster committee gives relief items to victims

The Regional Disaster Management Committee (RDMC) for Upper River Region (URR) on Friday gave relief items to nine households affected by windstorm at Songkunda, in Kantora District. The items distributed to the beneficiaries included: foodstuff, second hand clothes, water containers, and sanitary items, among others.


Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the Governor’s Office, the Regional Disaster Management coordinator for URR, Mawdo Amadou Jallow underscored the importance of the gesture, noting that the donated items will go a long way towards resurrecting the livehood of the affected families.


He narrated that the incident happened in Songkunda on the 27 of June, and affected all the nine households. Such humanitarian gesture, he noted is designed to reduce the vulnerability of communities. Jallow therefore urged the beneficiaries to make best use of the items and to put up preventive measures to avert the reccurrence of the incident.


For his part, the governor of the region, Alhaji Omar Khan, commended the government of The Gambia and the NDMA for providing assistance to the disaster victims, and urged the beneficiaries to make best use of the donated items.


Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Ebrima Fatty commended the URR Regional Disaster Management Committee for the assistance they have been rendering to the affected families in the region; that such kind of gesture will go a long way in improving their situation.
