Friday, September 03, 2010
The United States Embassy o in Banjul, Tuesday sponsored an  Iftar  ( fast breaking) for  students of Samba Kalla Arabic School in Lower Nuimi District of North Bank Region (NBR).

The Iftar, which was also attended by elders of the village, was the second of its kind that the Embassy hosted in the country this holy month of Ramadan. On the sideline of the Iftar, the US Embassy donated textbooks, footballs, cups and plates to the school. They also presented praying mats to some elders and rice for the needy people in the village. Speaking at the event, Fabakary Nana Sonko, the chief of Lower Nuimi District, thanked the US Embassy for sponsoring the Iftar. This he said is a clear demonstration of the embassy’s respect and honour for Muslims and the holy month. He said the donated items would go a long way in complementing the efforts of the government in ensuring that children are given quality and relevant education, and described the move by the embassy as a big moral boost to the school.

Chief Sonko used the occasion to call on the youths to desist from drugs, whilst calling on parents to enroll their kids at the school. For his part, Muhammed Saku Njie, the proprietor of the school, thanked the US Embassy for what he described as an important event in the annals of the school's history. He disclosed that the school was established six years ago with the aim of teaching the children English Language and Quranic memorization. He cited some Hadith in the Qur'an where the importance of providing Iftar for a person is mentioned. He also expressed gratitude to the US Embassy for donating the learning materials to the school.

Cindy Cregg, the charge d'Affairs at the US Embassy said they were honoured to be at the village to dine with the villagers. She cited the importance of Arabic schools, reflecting on the recently established Arabic school in California, United States. She thanked the chief and all those who graced the Iftar. She urged the villagers to enrol their kids in school, noting that it is due to education that Barack Obama is today the president of the United States of America.

In his vote of thanks, Imam Baba Leigh of the Kanifing Estate Mosque joined the previous speakers in commending the US Embassy on the Iftar. He said the support by the embassy will go a long way in moving the school to another level. He also stressed on the need for a clinic at the school.Prior to the Iftar, the delegation was taken on a conducted tour of the school.
