UTG orientates 600 studentsMonday, August 30, 2010 The University of The Gambian (UTG) last Friday oriented its
first batch of six hundred new intakes for the 2010-2011 academic year, at a
ceremony held at the its campus in Brikama. The occasion, which is a tradition at the University, is meant to give the new students firsthand information about what the institution can offer, the prospects and what is expected of them (the students) as they join the country's highest learning institution. It was also a platform where heads of various department talked about the prospects and challenges of their departments. The new students were expected to have another orientation session which is a departmental one. Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Omar Jah junior, deputy vice chancellor for Admin and Finance at the University of The Gambia, welcomed the new students to the University. He adduced that their task, as administrators, is only to put policies and strategies in place for the effective functioning of the institution, noting that the the academic success of the students remains in their (the students) hands. He urged the students to be good ambassadors of the University and advised them to respect their seniors and lecturers at all times. He assured them of his continuous support and guidance. Professor Ousman Nyan, deputy vice chancellor, responsible for Academics at the UTG, also welcomed the new students and advised them to be discipline and hardworking, and to make best use of the resources and facilities available at the UTG. Ousman Bojang, president of the UTG Students' Union, described orientation as the first step in the university life of the students. He implored on the students to take the union as their own and to maintain discipline and respect for their seniors and the lecturers. The function was also attended by the returning students.
