UTG, YCF organises exhibition

Africa » Gambia
Friday, June 19, 2009
The University of The Gambia Cultural and Performing Arts, Art-in-Education programme, in collaboration with the Youth Care Foundation (YCF), on Saturday 13th June, 2009, organised a book exhibition - works by Gambian writers - at the Alliance Franco-Gambienne.

The occasion also saw the presentation of a drama entitled: The Rebellion at the same occasion, members of the YCF presented a poem depicting two different worlds. Bugajoe, one of the empires, represents a country that is characterized by the will of the people in a kingdom where the emperor fervently believes in harmony and unity. This emperor works under democratic principles, the progress of the citizen his utmost desire. The other country typifies a society under totalitarianism. The emperor there is oppressive and tyrannical. His empire is named Wambiz.

The Rebellion, a drama presented by UTG students, places emphasis on the potential of Gambian women in different sectors. It conveys a belief of the students that the health and education of girls need to be respected and given priority too. The drama also explores the imposition of dangerous traditional practices on girls in the 21st century.

In addition to what African women have been subjected to in the past, the drama also shows that portrayed the contribution women can make towards development, if given the chance. It sends a strong argument that society can be liberated if women are empowered and given due recognition.
