Washington & Jefferson College boosts Tendaba schoolsWednesday, January 25, 2012 Students of Washington and Jefferson College in the United States of America, last Tuesday donated US $3000 worth of learning materials, sporting gears such as jerseys and footballs; and second hand clothing, among others, to the Tendaba Lower Basic and Nursery School, at a presentation ceremony held at the Tendaba Camp. Speaking at the occasion, Professor Buba Misawa, a Political Science lecturer at the Washington and Jefferson College, expressed delight at the presentation and recalled that the initiative started in 1999 when he first visited The Gambia as a Rotarian. He explained that he decided to bring his students to Tendaba for an educational trip, where he assured the community of Tendaba that he will do something for them. “In 2002, the project gave a small contribution to the schools and in 2006, the project decided to do bigger things for both the two schools by providing a kitchen for the nursery school, feeding programme for both the two schools in Tendaba, as well as bought uniforms for the students,” he disclosed. He also thanked David White and Haulages; and the Western Pennsylvania Africa Foundation (WePAFO) for their major contribution towards this programme. Speaking on behalf of Tendaba Lower Basic School, the head teacher, Mamadi Nyabally expressed delight and gratitude to the donors for the gesture. He also thanked them for contributing immensely to the feeding programme of the students as well as helping in creating a conducive learning environment for them.
