The West African Examinations Council has released the results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) for the May/June 2012 edition.

According to a press release from the Exams Council, a total of 7847 (seven thousand eight hundred and forty-seven) candidates from 66 (sixty-six) Senior Secondary Schools registered for the examination and out of the 7847 candidates that registered for the examination, 4226 (53.85%) were male while 3621 (46.15%) were female.

“In the 2012 May/June WASSCE, Gambian Candidates registered in 32 subjects. These included English Language, Mathematics and a host of Science, Arts, Commerce, and Technical Subjects. Out of the 32 subjects, the performance of candidates improved in 26 subjects when compared to performance in the previous year. However, performance regressed this year in six (6) subjects which included Economics, Literature-in-English and Further Mathematics” it stated.

On gender basis, the release indicated that male candidates did better than their female counterparts in 26 out of the 31 subjects registered by both genders. On the other hand, it added that female candidates did better than their male counterparts in 5 subjects such as auto-mechanics, Christian Religious Knowledge, Applied Electricity, French and Technical Drawing.

According to the West African Examinations Council, 394(three hundred and ninety-four) (5.02%) of all candidates obtained credit passes in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics. “When compared to the previous year’s figure of 351 (4.45%), there has been a marked improvement in the percentage obtaining the minimum requirement for university entrance,” it concluded.
