Waterman makes historic MLS debut

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, April 29, 2010
Gambia international teenage midfielder, Omar Jasseh, commonly known as Waterman, has made club history when he became the youngest player ever to play in an MLS game in the San Jose Earthquakes history.

The former Samger midfielder was 17 years, five months and 23 days old when he came onto the pitch as a substitute in the 62nd minute in Earthquakes' 3-2 defeat to Chivas on Saturday, April 24.  He wasted little time in getting in on the action earning his first yellow card of his career after just four minutes later.

Arturo Alvarez was previously the youngest player to play for the club when he debuted at 17 years, nine months and 19 days old on April 19, 2003 against Kansas City, when he came on as a substitute in the 85th minute. The Major League Soccer (MLS) club announced the signing of the Gambian to MLS contract on April 15, 2010, extending the number of Gambian players in America's premier tier football to seven players.

Jassey had trained with the club since early February. Prior to coming to the United States Jasseh spent three years in England with youth academies at Charlton Athletic FC, Chelsea FC and most recently with Crystal Palace FC.  He also spent part of 2009 training with fellow MLS club Toronto FC which house two Gambian players in Amadou Sanyang and Emmanuel Gomez.
