We need job adverts and more...

Africa » Gambia
Friday, June 05, 2009

Editor,

I concur with Amie Sanyang that job adverts must be regularly updated to cater for occupationally mobile Gambians in the diaspora, but I am hasty to say that there are additional avenues that can be incorporated into the author's nice and brilliant contribution.

My intentions here are geared towards widening the playing field and boosting our capabilities of embarking on bigger projects of job creation and networking amongst the diasporans for joint investments.

1. I strongly believe that the Labour department should come up with a website with appropriate tools that will allow Gambians in the diaspora to apply for jobs and upload resumes.

2. Employment agencies should emerge to cater for Gambians abroad who desire to come home. Such agencies may be able to provide additional services that will assist in the transition process i. e, make accommodation arrangements, transportation and other ancillary services.

3. I believe the Social Security department should also extend housing benefits to Gambians abroad and especially to those that have worked in The Gambia before. The homecoming for a lot of Gambian professionals in the diaspora is a laudable and commendable effort that must be encouraged and complemented with a well planned exit strategy from the West that will assure the returning professionals of "soft landing" from a social and economic stance point.

I believe most of us can't wait to be home to enjoy the predictable beautiful weather, the great outdoor environment, the food, and the smiling faces and above all to walk on a land that one can proudly call home.
