Well done!Thursday, May 17, 2012 Editorial Barely two
days after a Briton was found dead in his car in Bakoteh, three people
suspected to have orchestrated his murder are now in custody helping the police
in their investigations. This timely success of the police in apprehending the
suspects is indeed commendable, as they have once again proven to the whole
country that the institution is leaving no stone unturned in making this
country crime-free.
Much kudos go to IGP Yankuba Sonko, who led his team of investigators including senior officers to track down these unscrupulous elements in society. IGP Sonko has indeed transformed the police force, with guidance from the Ministry of the Interior and of course the motivation from the government under the leadership of President Jammeh. The fact that the IGP and his men were able to trace the suspects within 48 hours proves their hard work and commitment to duty. This action by the police will no doubt deter others from committing such act, as they would not have any chance to escape. However, the police should not see these achievements as an opportunity to relax. Efforts to make this country crime-free by the leadership are an open secret; complementing such efforts must be a continuous task. On the part of the citizenry, it should be noted that the police could not be left to do it alone. Making the country crime-free requires the cooperation of all. The Gambia, like all other decent societies has in place principles by which the people operate, and conduct themselves inline with some specific moral norms and values; and therefore criminality should not be condoned in the country. The constitution to be precise must serve as a reference for citizens and non-citizens alike. It is codified to be respected, so actions that contradict the constitution are criminal and deserve punishment according to its dictates. This is why the state provides for the establishment of institutions such as the judiciary, to interpret the law to the understanding of every individual as well as to administer its enforcement, as ignorance of the law is not an excuse. We are optimistic that once investigation into the matter is complete, the suspects will dance to the rhythm of justice without delay. The police as it is being manifested are exhausting all efforts within their capability to track down these unscrupulous elements in our society. The cooperation of the patriotic citizenry is crucial in the work of the police. A progressive nation is backed by a progressive populace. We should all perform our duties and responsibilities as citizens of the state. Keep up the momentum Gambia Police Force. Author: Daily Observer | Media Actions See Also |
