Woman arraigned for infanticide

Africa » Gambia
Monday, September 07, 2009
One Sira Gomez, was last Friday, September 4, 2009, arrained before Justice Moses Richards of the Special Criminal Court in Banjul on two  counts of concealing birth and murder.

The accused was alleged to have delivered a child secretly and then disposed of the the baby at a dumping site in Bakau Newtown on August 1st, 2009, at Bakau, Kanifing Municipality. When the matter came, the accused informed the court that her relatives had promised to secure the services of a lawyer for her when she was detained at the police headquarters in Banjul.

She then lamented that her relative have, however, not been visiting her since she was taken to Mile 2. As such, she explained, she could not tell whether they would still provide a legal counsel for her. Justice Richards then ordered that the master and registrar of the High Court provide a legal counsel for the accused. The matter was adjourned to September 16, 2009.
