Workers Day observed in CRR

Africa » Gambia
Friday, May 04, 2012

Workers in the Central River Region (CRR) on Tuesday May 1, 2012, joined the rest of the international community to observe May Day at a ceremony held in Janjangbureh. The day was observed in the form of match past, speeches and sporting activities.

Addressing workers on behalf of the governor, Alhaji Malang Saibo Camara, the deputy governor said that the importance of the day cannot be overemphasised, adding that the event will also foster greater understanding and cement the already existing cordial and professional relationships among civil servants and workers in the region.

He pointed out that the sporting activity is an effective tool for peace building, solidarity and friendship amongst people of diverse backgrounds as well as enhance unity in diversity among workers. He commended the people for the impressive turnout and participation and paid tribute to all workers who were with them in this event last year but have retired or passed away.

On his part, Demba Y Baldeh, the regional sports coordinator stated that May Day has a great significance to the human race as it dates back to 1919 when the world was shattered with great disorder, hopeless and with so many people  in need of correction. He thanked all for taking part in this important day.
