WRDMC gives to disaster victimsThursday, August 26, 2010 The Western Region Disaster Management Committee (WRDMC) in
collaboration with the Gambia Red Cross Society, on Wednesday presented some
household items to the disaster victims in the Western Region, at a ceremony
held at the Regional Disaster Management Office in Brikama. The donated items which included: rice, cooking oil, blankets, among others and distributed among 22 displaced families, comprising a total number of 210 people. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Lamin Sanneh, the governor of Western Region, said disasters are never prayed for but if they happen, the victims will appreciate any form of assistance.Sanneh used the platform to commend the disaster management committee for a job well done. He revealed that last year they appealed to some parastatals in the region to help them with disaster relief items but non of those parastatals heeded their request. Lamin Camara, a representative of the GRCS explained that
they collaborated with the disaster committee because they have the same goals;
that is to come to the aid of the needy at all times. Serign Modou Joof, the regional disaster coodinator for Western Region, revealed that they
registered 84 families and only 22 familes benefited from the said items, which
means that they have more families to cover. He therefore appealed for
assistance from organisations as well as
the private sector. Alhaji Dembo Kelleng Bojang, chief of Kombo Central, also
made similar sentiments. Modou Sowe, a beneficiary, thanked the committee for the
gesture on behalf of other beneficiaries. In a similar development, the disaster management committee also donated a scanning machine and some medical items to the Brikama Health Centre. Fatou sowe, a staff of Brikama Health Centre, received the items on behalf of the health centre. Author: by Fatou Sowe | Media Actions See Also |
