Tuesday, June 12, 2012

The National Wrestling Championship Organising Committee on Friday paid a courtesy call on the Honourable minister of Youth & Sports, Alieu Kebba Jammeh at his office at the Quadrangle in Banjul.

The visit was meant among other things to brief the minister oncurrent preparations for the upcoming National Wrestling Championship slated for the 29th June-1st July at the Independence Stadium.

Minister Jammeh thanked all and sundry present at the occasion, while he took the opportunity to relay a few messages from president Jammeh in a meeting they had earlier. He stated that wrestling is of high interest to the Gambian leader who is glad that the sport is moving another step.

Abdou Syllon, the chairman of the committee and vice president of the Gambia Wrestling Association, said they have taken the responsibility of decentralizing the sport of wrestling. “We are working day in day out to make sure wrestling excels in the country,” he said.

Abdul Aziz Titao Mendy, the Development Officer of the National Sports Council who is also a member to the Organising Committee disclosed that all necessary arrangements have been made but that their major constraint is money.

The meeting was also attended by the acting permanent secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Momodou Joof, the president of the Gambia Wrestling Association, Matarr Jarjue, and the executive secretary of the National Sports Council, Mamudou Max Jallow and members of the Committee.
