Zonal Athletics Champs soon

africa » gambia » bakau
Thursday, October 04, 2007

Following a series of meetings convened by zonal representatives that form the Organising Committee of the Inter-zonal Athletic Championship, the committee has finally slated  this year's edition to September 16 and 17, 2007, at the Independence Stadium, Bakau.

The long-awaited championship will bring together various zones within the Kanifing Municipality and Western Region, as Banjul zone have vowed not to participate in this year's  edition.

Synonyms to zonal football championship, the zones that have made their interest to participate include Bakau, Serrekunda East, Sukuta, Lamin, Gunjur and Brikama. These zones will take part in all the ten  events.

Momodou Demba, Chairman of the Organising Committee, said this year's events will be competitive as compared to last year, noting that they have ample time to prepare for the November championship.

On why the organisation of the championship, Demba said: " The competition was proposed last year by the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC), as a trial to encourage zones to diversify their sporting activities. Most of these zones only busy themselves with nawettan football competitions, so it is important that we involve ourselves in other sporting disciplines."
