Bakau coach grateful to fans

Buba Minteh, head coach of the victorious Bakau Zonal team, said his team was able to clinch the 2007 zonal trophy - thanks to the huge support from the Bakau fans, the sports committee and entire members of his technical staff.

He said the unflinching support enjoyed by the team during this year's zonal football championship was tremendous, noting that the sensational victory was a collective effort.

Coach Minteh proudly guided Bakau to their first zonal trophy in three years and third overall zonal title, in his first year as Bakau zonal team coach. However, the industrious youth coach does not want to hug the credit.

"I was very much delighted that I won the cup in my first year as a zonal team coach. Though it was a rough road, the harder the fight, the sweeter the victory. So I am happy that we had the last laugh," said the former Steve Biko goalkeeper.

Bakau defeated their arch-rivals, Banjul, 1-0 in a fiercely contested final on Sunday to claim the coveted title.

The success could not have come at a better time as many believed that it will undoubtedly help cement the strained relations that currently exist between the Ebrima Jallow-led Bakau Zonal and Sports Committee and the public.
