Operation Clean the Municipality, an initiative designed to wipe out solid waste within the Municipality, was yesterday, launched by Yankuba Colley, the new mayor of KMC, at a ceremony held in front the Observer premises in Bakau.

Twenty tractors were lined up along the Garba Jahumpa Road ready to collect locally generated waste in Bakau for the next two days.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Colley assured that from now on, the tractors will be collecting solid waste from each household, adding that residents are now relieved of the burden of carrying refuses to dump sites.

The KMC mayor said his council no longer wants to see dump sites around again as they expose the residents of the bustling metropolis to an array of health hazards.

Mayor Colley used the occasion to advise the residents to do away with littering the streets, saying that his council will be vigilant in its drive to make the municipality "environment friendly".

Asked about the sustainability of the initiative, Mayor Colley replied in the positive, saying "it will be sustainable. We want to make sure that Kanifing Municipality becomes an environment friendly and this is achievable through such an initiative."

He promised to provide his mobile phone number to the public for any concern about any irregularity in project.
