Aji Awa Bah Nursery school in Bakau, recently got a sponsorship package and gifts from their British friends and sponsors Mr Tony Shephard,Vic and Tina Smith.

The presentation ceremony which was held at the school premesis showcased handing over  of gifts and learning materials to students and their parents.

Mrs Saffie Bobb Jobe, Headmistress of the school  gave a brief historical overview of the link between the school and their UK friends.

According to her, the UK sponsors had just completed construction of a two class room storey building for the school.

Mr Tony Shephard President of St.Johns Ambulance in Lewes, and one of the sponsors from UK, spoke at length  on the historical background of the sponsorship project..

He revealed that when they returned back to UK  last September 2007, after their visit to The Gambia, he organised a grand fund raising concert in his Church, which was attended by several individual  philanthropists and  well wishers of Gambian childrend. "A total of £1,550 was collected from this concert, and this money was used for the construction of the two classroom storey buildings"  he asserted.

Mr Tony Shephard revealed   that plans are underway to organise another fund raising event for the school when they return to the UK.  He added that the proceeds of the fundraising, will go into building another classroom block for the school.

The UK based charity worker who gained recognition from the UK Government, took the opportunity and expressed sincere thanks and appreciation to their supporters in  UK, America and other parts of the world, Susan Fleet, among others.

Mrs Yaharr Jallow, proprietress of Aji Awa Bah Nursery  School, thanked the donors and described them as true friends of the school. She described Mr Sephard, President of St John's Ambulance in Lewes, Tina and Vic Smith as not only friends but  also sponsors of the school  . She backed up her statement with reference to the number of students sponsored by the donors.

The nursery school proprietress further described the donor's gesture as a true manifestation of their love for  Gambian children and their welfare, especially in the provision of quality and affordable education which according to her, is in line with Gambia Government education Policy programme, as stated in the vision 2020 development document she concluded.
