Former Bakau Imam dies

africa » gambia » bakau
Wednesday, February 06, 2008

After a decade of poor health, the former Head Imam of Bakau, Alhagie Momodou Lamin Fatou Bojang, passed away  at the age of 88 .

Shorlty after the annoucement of his death, hundreds of well wishers among them erudite scholars stormed his residence in Bakau Tamba Kunda to pay their last respect to a man widely respected in Bakau for his steadfastness and adherence to Islam. This was followed  by recitation of the Holy Qur'an by erudite scholars  for the Almigthy's  continues mercy on the departed soul.

The late Imam was appointed to the post in 1989 and had since been actively leading  prayers at the Bakau Central Mosque up to 1996 when his heath began to deteriorate.

The late  Imam, who is survived by 30 children, was   laid to rest yesterday  at the Bakau cemetery .
