One of The Gambia's most successful businesswoman has opened the floodgate of donations ahead of celebrations marking the one-year anniversary of President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh's HIV/AIDs breakthrough and other treatment programmes on January 17.

Aji Jeck Cham formally handed over 100 crates of soft canned drinks to Dr Tamsir Mbowe, director general of President Jammeh's Treatment Programme, at a ceremony held at the Department of State for Health and Social Welfare.

Ms Cham, whose magnetism and expertise in business have won her a glorious popularity, was beaming with delight at the ceremony, which was attended by officials of the state department and members of the presidential treatment team.

Speaking on behalf of the donor, Agi Masan Mbye, who spoke on behalf of Jeck, rated the gesture as a modest reciprocity, considering the magnitude of generosity the president has been giving to Gambians, particularly women. Ms Mbye congratulated the Gambian leader on the successes registered by his treatment programme and then assured him of Jeck's solidarity at all times.

Dr Tamsir Mbowe, who doubles as the director of Health and Medical Services, thanked Jeck Cham on behalf of President Jammeh and his medical team for the generous donation.

Dr Mbowe informed the ceremony that there has been remarkable successes since the commencement of treatment on January 17 last year, resulting to the successful treatment of thousands of people by the Gambian leader.

"It is a worthy celebration. It is a big achievement in the history of medicine," he said.

The Russia and Ireland-trained gynaecologist, who is coordinating the anniversary celebration, called on individuals and institutions to emulate Jeck Cham's gesture. He also thanked her for the support being given to the health sector.

Reports reaching the Daily Observer revealed that three international artists and local artists are being lined up to perform at the July 22 Square, where the celebrations will be held.
