Mariam Jammeh assists SOS Children's Village

Monday, October 20, 2008

Mariam Yahya Jammeh, the first child of President Yahya  Jammeh and her excellency madame Zainab Yaya Jammeh, last Friday, extended her generosity to the SOS Children's Village in Bakoteh with a  donation of  items vital to the needs of the children  in the village.

The items included food stuff, materials and a hotchpotch of children's toys; they were presented on her behalf by Honorable Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay, the speaker of the National Assembly.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Speaker Jahumpa Ceesay expressed the donors concern about the welfare of the children in the village which she said prompted the donation.

According to her, the donor's generosity was not a surprise, bearing in mind that she hailed from generous parents whose concern for people's welfare cannot be overemphasized.

"Mariam Jammeh's gesture can be extended to other areas but she always want it to go to the children's village so as to promote the welfare of the children," the speaker said, and went on to argue that she was of the belief that this move speaks volumes of the concern the Jammeh Family attached to the welfare of children, expressing hope that the gesture would go a long way in boosting the needs of the children in the village.

Receiving the items on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Haddy Njie-Touray, director of the village, hailed the donor's generosity. She described Mariam Jammeh as a young philanthropist who has the interest of the children in the village at heart.

She added: "Her gesture is the right one to the children's village considering the fact that the items are of great demand to the children."

Present at the ceremony were members of the National Assembly Select Committee on Women and Children's affairs.
