Abdoulie Kujabi denies receiving D75,000 - Prosecution witness reveals

Second prosecution witness Lamin Bojang has told the Banjul Magistrate Court, presided over by senior magistrate Kayode Olajubutu, that Abdoulie Kujabi, the former director general of the NIA, has denied receiving D75,000, being the proceed from the sale of a government vehicle to one Alagie Conteh. Detective Bojang made this revelation in an ongoing vehicle theft case involving Supt Manlafi Sanyang, the former head of Vehcile and  Logistics Unit at the State House.

Bojang, who is attached to the Serious Crimes Unit of the Gambia Police Force, said when he went to Abdoulie Kujabi to enquire about the sum, Mr Kujabi denied ever receiving money from the accused. According to Bojang, Kujabi admitted referring Mr Conteh to Supt Manlafi Sanyang, who was the then government vehicle controller, when he was approached.

At that juncture, the defence counsel, Lamin Camara,  raised objection on the basis that the evidence Bojang was giving was another person's version, which he argued tantamounts to a conjecture.

Magistrate Olajubutu sustained the objection and the prosecution cross-examined the witness who informed the court that he had taken a voluntary statement from Mr Kujabi.

The prosecution then applied to tender Mr Kujabi's statement in court, but defence counsel Camara raised another objection on the basis that the statement has no relation to the accused, as he cannot identify what he has not seen. But Magistrate Olajubutu overruled the defence objection, before adjourning the case to June 11 for continuation of the proceedings.

Emmanuel Fagbenle, the director of Public Prosecution, represented the state.
