Manslaughter case hits court

africa » gambia » brikama
Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Abdoulie Sanyang, (address withheld), who is reported to have unintentionally killed one Kajalie Badjie at a forest between Berending and Kartong Villages in the Kombo South, Western Region was recently arraigned before Magistrate EF M'Bai, of the Brikama Magistrates Court.

The incident reportedly occurred on September 14, last year, when Mr Sanyang set out to hunt in the forest.

Mr Sanyang is facing two charges under Section 186 of the Criminal Code, Cap 10 Volume III and illegal possession of firearms, which is contrary to Section 43(1) of the Arms and Ammunition Regulations.

When the case was called recently, Magistrate EF M'Bai ordered the court to liaise with the high court so that the accused person could be provided with a lawyer, before the accused takes his plea, as the alleged offence is a complicated one.

During the second sitting, Police Prosecutor 134 Sambou had informed the court that the lawyer who was assigned to take the case had informed the prosecution that he would not be able to represent the accused. He added that the high court is expected to provide the accused with a lawyer within the soonest possible time.

The case was then  adjourned to July 7th for continuation.
