Hunter's manslaughter trial adjourned

africa » gambia » brikama
Tuesday, September 23, 2008
The trial of Abdoulie Sanyang, a hunter who was charged with manslaughter and illegal possession of firearms at the Brikama Magistrates Court, has stalled. The case could not proceed as the accused does not have legal representation.

Mr Sanyang was charged for unlawfully killing one Kajalie Badjie on 14 September, 2007, in a forest situated between Berending and Kartong Villages in the Kombo South.
He was also charged with illegal possession of firearms.

The first magistrate to hear the case, Principal Magistrate EF M'Bai, had ordered the court registrar to liaise with the High Court for the accused to be provided with a lawyer. He was provided with a lawyer who later announced his unwillingness to take up the case.

When the case resumed before Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh, last Monday, Magistrate Jammeh told the court that the case is a serious one and that the accused needed legal presentation to be provided by the state. He revealed that the court had written a letter for him to be provided with a counsel but to no avail.
The case was then adjourned to 23 September for the accused to be provided with a defence counsel.
