Driver bags D2,000 fine

Kumba Sillah-Camara, senior magistrate at the Bundung Magistrates' Court, on Tuesday, convicted and fined one Dam Mbye to a sum of D2,000, in default to serve six months imprisonment. Dam Mbye was found guilty on two counts of careless and unlicensed driving  contrary to the Motor Traffic Act.According to the particulars of the offense, Dam Mbye, on September 21, along the Tabokoto and Abuko highway in the Kanifing Municipality, drove a motor vehicle (BJL 0441 E),  without due care and attention thereby causing an accident.Count two also indicated that on the same day and place, Dam Mbye was driving the same vehicle without a valid driving license.

Dam Mbye who pleaded guilty to the charges begged the court for mercy saying "I have been driving since the year 2000 and I have never committed any traffic offense. I am the breadwinner of my family and this is my first time in court.

"In her ruling, Magistrate Sillah-Camara convicted him on court one to a fine of D1,500 in default to serve three months in jail and on court two, D500, in default to serve another three months in jail. Both sentences are to be served concurrently. Sergeant 1042 Kujabi stood in for the IGP.
