A serious fire outbreak wrecked five vehicles and a number of houses at Njau Camp in Upper Saloum District, Central River Region (CRR).

A cash amount of D98,000, ?6000 and CFA500,000 were not spared by the fire disaster which apparently started from a tall dry grasses near the fence which was close to the garage and raged through the camp, consuming the vehicles one by one.

Although the cause of the fire continues to elude everyone, the police have mounted investigations to ascertain its cause, as some have speculated that there could foul play.

Narrating the incident to this reporter, Hendry Donald, proprietor and manager of the camp, confirmed that the inferno started at 1:30 am and lasted for several hours. He said the wreckage left by the fire is inestimable as many valuable items also perished in the night.

A visibly distraught Donald disclosed that some of the cash included the salaries of at least 50 of his employees.

Momodou Katim Touray, deputy governor of Central River Region, the regional police commissioner, Momodou Jobarteh and the NAM of the area Hon Sainey Mbye, visited the camp to express their regret and solidarity.

Deputy Governor Touray expressed sympathy on behalf of the governor, citing numerous assistance Hendry rendered to the government and the community.

He asserted that the camp is also been providing employment opportunities for the youth which minimises rural-urban migration.
