The Gambia United Society in UK (GAUSUK), last Wednesday, handed over four thousand and two hundred (4,200) long lasting insecticide bednets to the Association of Youths Against Malaria (TAYAM).

The nets are meant for distribution in the North Bank, Central River (North) and Lower River Regions. The ceremony was held at the Catholic Relief Services warehouse building in Kanifing.

Receiving the bednets on behalf of TAYAM, Omar Ceesay, programme director of TAYAM said his association's main concern is to combat malaria in The Gambia. He continued that TAYAM will continue to partner with other organisations to ensure that pregnant women and children are protected against malaria.

Adama Jagne-Sonko, representing the Department of State for Health, who also doubles as deputy programme manager at the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) expressed delight with their partnership with TAYAM, Red Cross and CRS.

She said that NMCP has been distributing bednets countrywide, to prevent malaria at no cost.

She added that NMCP has different ways and means of preventing malaria and that The Gambia has taken the lead in malaria prevention throughout the sub-region.

She finally thanked the Gambia United Society in UK for their support and urged others to emulate them.

Saikou Jaiteh, spokesman of The Gambia United Society said their society was formed two years ago. He revealed that they have organised fundraising shows to fund their activities. He promised that they will continue to help Gambians.
