Tuesday, January 22, 2008
The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), in collaboration with Greenseeds Inc of Canada and stakeholders in the area of waste management,  recently conducted a one-day training workshop on integrated municipal waste management at the KMC Head Office. The workshop was aimed at improving the quality and efficient management of waste within the Municipality.

Speaking at the occasion, Gibou Jagne, KMC interim chairman, in his opening remarks said the occasion is very significant since it is a process that will lead to a cleaner environment. Mr Jagne expressed gratitude to Greenseeds Inc for being in partnership with KMC. He highlighted that this is the first time for a private sector partner to  have expressed its readiness to invest in waste management, adding that it is a pride for the entire municipality.

Mr Jagne emphasised that The Gambia government will never hesitate in the search for improved social services. He noted that the vast majority of inhabitants in the municipality are poor and therefore need improved waste management services. He urged participants to keenly follow the deliberation to enable them to come out with firsthand knowledge on waste management.

Kemo Conteh, director of Governance lauded the initiative. He revealed that the KMC and the Department of State for Local Government have been struggling hard to resolve the  waste problem  in the Municipality. Mr Conteh said he had no doubt that The Gambia would one day become the cleanest country under  the visionary leadership of President Jammeh.

For her part, Dr Linda, executive director of Greenseeds Inc, said her organisation is proud to be partners with the KMC for the purpose of providing better waste management to the people. She expressed optimism that with this new partnership, the KMC will surely achieve it goal.

Abdoulie MB Sanyang, chief executive officer of KMC, said the council is doing its best to end the problem of waste collection in the municipality. He added that the programme is another means of strengthening their efforts and pave the way forward to end illegal dumping in the municipality.
