The Gambia Teacher's Union (GTU) and Syndicas Unique Democratique des Enseignants (SUDEs) du Senegal in Dakar - one of the leading Teacher's Union's in Senegal, recently celebrated Senegambia Day at the Gambia Teacher's Cooperative Credit Union (GTUCCU) headquarters in Kanifing.

Speaking at the ceremony, Essa Sowe, acting general-secretary (GTU) lauded the partnership between the two institutions, which he said has greatly helped to safeguard and  promote the interest and wellbeing of the people of the two countries.

For his part, Omar J Ndure, President of the Gambia Teachers Union gave a brief background on the partnership saying "GTU and SUDEs belong to a body called Education International and are guided by it's principles and objectives."

According to him, the principle objective in all this is to promote the statues of teachers and improve their professional standings. He added that the co-operation between GTU and SUDEs in all matters of common interests will greatly help to address certain teachers' welfare.

Other speakers at the occasion included Babucarr Bouye, permanent secretary, DOSBSE and the Senegalese Ambassador to The Gambia, Momodo Fall.

It could be recalled that in December 2007, a joint communique was signed between The Gambia Teachers Union and SUDEs in Thies, Senegal based on the common desire to foster regional integration through increased access and promotion of professional relevance and equity.
