As part of activities marking the 30 years of existence, Banjul Breweries limited (BBL) on Wednesday 27th February, 2008, donated cleansing materials worth over one million dalasis to Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) in a bid to boosting "Operation Clean the municipality", at a ceremony held at the Banjul Breweries premises, Kanifing.

The donated materials included 70 wheelbarrows, 70 rakes, 70 foxes, 70 buckets, 70 dustbins, 150 T-shirts all bearing the catchphrase: "Operation clean KMC".

The items were handed over to Momodou Kotu Cham, secretary of state for Forestry and Environment who also handed them to Momodou BS Kanteh, Director of Technical Services Network, onbehalf of Momodou B Sarr, the Executive Director of the National Environment Agency (NEA), who finally handed them down to Yankuba Colley, the lord mayor of KMC.

In his keynote address, Mr Momodou Kotu Cham, secretary of state for Forestry and the Environment, applauded the gesture of Banjul Breweries, saying the donation was a demonstration of the company's support to "Operation Clean KMC". He added that they have infact initiated certain principles and practices that have been accepted at National Assembly level with regards to national management of environment .

According to him, it's not a surprise to see BBL again coming to plough back part of their profits into the welfare of the nation. He therefore urged other business entrepreneurs to emulate BBL.

Forestry and Environment Secretary Cham further went on: "The sustainability of this project needs collaborative efforts of the community without which the efforts wil be meaningless," he said.

Speaking earlier, Yankuba Colley, Mayor of KMC, commended BBL for their meaningful contributions, noting that the material will go a long way in complementing their efforts in making the Municipality free from refuse.

Deputising for Momodou B Sarr, the Executive Director of NEA, Momodou BS Kanteh, echoed similar sentiment. He appealed to the entire nation particularly the inhabitant of KMC to help in their small way to keep illegal dumpsites clean.

For her part, Fatou Sinyan Merigan, Financial Controller Banjul Breweries Limited, pointed out that the presentation is part of her company's contributions in complementing government efforts in key priority areas which is also in line with President Yahya Jammeh's vision 2020.

She noted that Saturday February 23rd witnessed the commencement of the 1st phase of operation Clean KMC, initiated by BBL. The occasion was also attended by Abdou Colley, secretary of state for Trade, Industry and Employment, and Buba P Jallow, permanent secretary ,Department of State for Forestry and Environment chaired the ceremony.
