africa » gambia » kanifing
Tuesday, May 27, 2008
Ms Min Wee Kan, the Unicef representative to The Gambia, has disclosed that Kanifing Municipality and Upper River Region (URR) are the major areas, where her office will focus its attention on in its Country Programme for 2007-2011.

The Unicef boss made this observation yesterday at chambers of Kanifing Municipal Council, during the inauguration of a Technical Advisory Committee jointly constituted by her agency and KMC.

Ms Kan told the gathering that her office gives priority to women and children, nutrition, child health, as well as education. She informed members of the committee of her office's numerous projects in the municipality, amongst which were the provision of toilet facilities to New Jeshwang Lower Basic School and the provision of drinking water in Ebo Town.

The UNICEF boss assured the advisory committee of her office's preparedness to work with them in order to achieve the set targets.

Ms Kan then urged members of the committee to use datas as tool for the effective implementation of programmes. She lauded the collaboration between her agency and the government of The Gambia.

In his statement, Yankuba Kolley, the the mayor of Kanifing Municipality, thanked the UNICEF boss for collaborating with his council, acknowledging that Kanifing Municipality has been benefitting from Unicef programmes.

Mayor Kolley reminded members of the committee about the task ahead and urged them to live up to expectations. He assured the Unicef boss of his office's willingness to give all the necessary support to the technical committee.

The meeting, attended by councillors and Unicef officials, was chaired by Dawda Jallow of the National Council for Civic Education.
