Pap Saine bailed

africa » gambia » kanifing
Wednesday, February 04, 2009
Magistrate Sagarr Jahateh of the Kanifing Magistrates Court yesterday, 4 February 2008, granted bail to Pap Saine, managing editor and co-proprietor of The Point newspaper, in the sum of D50,000 with one Gambian surety who must deposit an ID card with the court registrar.

Pap Saine was charged with false publication and broadcasting. The charge is in connection to an article published on The Point with the title "Arrested Gambian diplomat now at Mile 2". He pleaded not guilty. The Gambian diplomat in question is Lamin B Sanyang alias Sabi. The Point boss pleaded not guilty. Momodou Drammeh, his counsel, applied for his client to be granted bail.

This was objected to by the prosecutor, Inspector Fadera, but the presiding magistrate decided to grant the accused bail as, according to her, the prosecution had not advanced sufficient evidence for her to deny Pap Saine bail.  The case was adjourned to 19 February 2009.
