Monday, October 22, 2007

At least seven people have been confirmed dead recently when a boat carrying 37 passengers, who were going to Senegal for the Koriteh prayers capsized in the sea.

Hundreds of sympathisers and well -wishes gathered at Tanji Community landing site, including the Imam and the Alkalo of Tanji, on Friday to pay tribute to the   seven:4 males and 3 females.

Salifu Bojang, a Fisheries Officer confirmed the story, and explained the whole incident to our reporter.

According to him, the incident emanated from overloading and heavy wind.

For his part, Abdou Njie, Secretary to the Senegalese Ambassador in The Gambia, representing Ambassador Momodou Fall, said they are glad to see the initiative and the   support made by   Tanji people.

"This is an indication that as Muslims we are brothers and sisters,'' he said.

He also thanked   President   Yahya   Jammeh for his efforts in bringing Gambians and Senegalaise together.

The gathering was witnessed by the SoS for Forestry and Environment, Momodou Kuto Cham and the Director of Fisheries, Adiatou Njie.

The Tanji   Community Fisheries, headed by the Alkalo of Tanji, Cherno Bojang donated D30,000 to the victims' families.
