Six in the dock

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Wuyeh Dorboe and five other from Tanji village Kombo South were on Monday arraigned before Magistrate John Njie of the Brikama Magistrates' Court on charges of criminal trespass, contrary to the Laws of The Gambia.

The six accused persons: Wuyeh Darboe, Sereign Jarju, Bubacarr Jadama, Lamin Camara, Fatou Jammeh and Hawa Jarju were alleged to have entered the compound of one Saloum Colley (the complainant) at Tanji village on 3rd July, 2007, with intent to intimidate or annoy him.

When the chargesheet was read to them, they all pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

Narrating the case before the court, the complainant, Saloum Colley, said that on the day of the incident, Fatou Jammeh and Hawa Jarju (fifth and sixth accused persons) came to his home and asked for one Jarju-Ba, "and told them that I did not see her". Mr colley added that they went and later came back and asked for Yai Ceesay, " and then   repeated the same old story".

Mr Colley further told the court that when these two accused persons left, he (the complainant) put his generator off and went to bed. He further told the court that later on all the six accused persons came and stood at his door talking. "I then opened my door to inquire what was going on, but they told me that they were looking for Yai Ceesay, the wife of the second accused's wife, insisting that she was in my house," Mr Colley said.

He further noted that the six accused persons then started raining insult on him, advancing towards him with sticks in their hands. "My brother and father told me not to exchange words with them, neither to pay back their insults," Mr Colley told the court.

According to him, he then decided to report the matter to the village Alkalo and Tujereng Police Station, where he gave his statement.

The case was at this point adjourned.
