Local Gov't election: A success

africa » gambia » western region
Thursday, January 31, 2008
Pa Khan, the Independent Election Commission's regional officer for Western Region has described the just concluded Local Government elections as a resounding success despite the low voter turnout in most of the wards across the region.

According to him, the IEC has little knowledge about the low voter turn-out but will continue to educate the masses prior to any election.

Mr Khan made this remarks in an interview with the Daily Observer  at the IEC Western Region office in Brikama. He equally described the election as free and fair noting that this was due to the IEC's intensive efforts to sensitise the public about the importance of local government elections and its importance.

The IEC Western Region officer further noted that as a patriotic citizen of a country, it is one's civil right to participate in that country's democratisation processes. "Through this, one is empowered by law," he noted.

Commending the IEC for taking up its responsibilities effectively, Mr Khan emphasised that there is still need for more education exercises for the people to let them gain more knowledge on their civil rights in order to fully participate in the democratic process of the nation.

He then confirmed that there were twenty-four wards in the Brikama administrative region with most of the seats unopposed. This, he said, leads to the massive victory of the ruling APRC party. He then urged the people to get involved in the development of their local government areas adding that there is an act that empowers them to take part in national developments.
