Complainant Gives Evidence in Assault Trial




One Omar Sanyang, a driver residing in Lamin village, recently testified as the first prosecution witness in the ongoing assault trial against one Abdoulie Kanteh, before Magistrate Isatou Janneh of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court.

In his testimony, the witness told the court that on September 3rd, 2016, while driving to Brikama from Serrekunda, he came up to around Banjulinding junction  –   when all the passengers alighted the vehicle –  and made a U-turn and went back toward Serrekunda.

He said when he arrived at the Lamin NTC junction, his apprentice asked him to give him some time to go and buy some eggs. He said on seeing two women who live in his neighborhood, he (witness) instructed his apprentice to allow the women to get in the car.

He narrated that after a while he heard the accused person insulting and querying over his (witness) decision to let the two women enter his car. He said he responded to the accused person by asking whether he (accused) is the one to decide who could enter his (witness) car.

He said when he attmepted to get on his car, the accused person gave him a blow on the face, and he fainted.

The witness further told the court that he could feel pain around his neck due to the way he fell on the ground, adding that he was taken to a pharmacy but the pharmacist said he would not touch him unless the matter was reported to the police.

He revealed that the matter was then reported at the Mandinary police station and two police officers later escorted him to the Banjulinding health centre where he was admitted for a while and later discharged.

He further narrated that the incident happened at night and the next morning he went back to the police station to give his statement.

While giving evidence under cross-examination, the witness told the court that the accused person was the first person to insult him and that was why he (witness) also insulted him back and he was the first to hit him as well.

The accused person is alleged to have unlawfully assaulted Omar Sanyang by giving him a blow on his face and caused him actual bodily harm on or about the 3rd September 2016, at Lamin village.
