Justice O Ottaba of the High Court in Banjul has ordered for a woman who is alleged to have caused the death of a 3-year-old girl in Sinchu Madado village in the Central River Region South to be taken to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) for a medical examination to determine her mental fitness to stand trial.
Justice Ottaba’s order for Hawa Mbye to be mentally examined followed an application made by Legal Aid Lawyer S. Kennedy representing Hawa, who told the court that the Prison Authorities and the mother of the accused had informed her that she is mentally unstable.
Lawyer Kennedy said he was also told that the accused usually acts abnormally which warranted him to apply for her to be medically examined. State counsel M Koita did not however object to the defence’s application.
Hawa is said to have caused the death of Yama Boye, a 3-year-old girl, by dumping her into a public well on or about 2nd July 2016 at Sinchu Madado village in the Central River Region South.
The case is adjourned to 12th October 2016.
