The Gambia Rural Poor Association (GAMRUPA) in Belgium in collaboration with GAMRUPA-Gambia Chapter recently donated an assortment of medical, school and office equipment, footballs and second hand clothing to institutions and families within the West Coast Region. The presentation was held at Siffoe Village in Kombo South district.
GAMRUPA is a community-based organisation registered in both The Gambia and Belgium. The organisation seeks to support and contribute to the development and improvement of rural institutions and communities.
Speaking at the ceremony, the GAMRUPA Gambia Country Coordinator, Kalifa Kanteh said his organization maintained firm commitment to supporting people particularly the poor and needy.
Kanteh expressed hope that the donated items would be of better use to the beneficiaries, affirming that the items donated to the health and educational institutions would improve service delivery.
Lamin Camara, president of GAMRUPA-Gambia Chapter, explained that the support they are giving out to institutions and families is a commitment members of the association took upon themselves.
Camara reminded the gathering that section 220 of Constitution of The Gambia has sanctioned every citizen to ensure full participation in development whether in their communities or national.
“This is the commitment that GAMRUPA is trying to stand on. For 15 year, we have maintained strong commitment to supporting the welfare and development of Gambian people with a focus on the poor and needy,” he said.
He said the support will help improve operation of the beneficiary institutions and thus called on them to ensure maximum use of the items. He commended GAMRUPA-Belgium for their support, saying their contribution is complimenting Government’s efforts in improving the health and education sectors.
Fatoumatta Sambou, the Association’s Women Chairperson, said the donation, which is among series of its kind, is part of her association’s genuine contribution to national development.
According to her, GAMRUPA’s development interventions has brought unity and corporation amongst the people of Siffoe, recalling that since the inception of the organisation it has addressed most of the communities’ needs especially in the areas of health, education and water among others.
