The Government of The Gambia under the dynamic leadership of President Jammeh, Babili Mansa has unveiled an US$8M (equivalent to D360M) five-year agricultural project targeting farmers in the Upper River Region.
The disclosure was made by Musa Amul Nyassi, the minister of Lands and Regional Governments who also doubles as the APRC URR liaison officer at meetings in Gambissara and Basse on Saturday attended by thousands of people.
The project, according to him, will support rice cultivation, animal husbandry and poultry. He said the project will provides 3 tractors, 70 power tillers and stores to the region. He said the government attaches great importance to agriculture, adding that the project will greatly transform the agricultural sector in URR and urged the people to vote for President Jammeh.
The announcement was highly welcomed by the people of URR amidst cheering and clapping.
Speaking to the Daily Observer shortly after the announcement, the minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Ismaila Sanyang said the project, which is currently under implementation is a five-year project and it is going to target crop value chain.
“The project will contribute to land development in the rice areas and over 150 hectares of rice areas will be developed under the project. Access roads will be constructed not only to rice fields but also to markets as well as five stores that can accommodate 100 metric tons of rice,” said Minister Sanyang.
