The family of Hassum Ceesay in partnership with the Writers’ Association of The Gambia (WAG) recently launched the Hassum Ceesay Memorial Prize for Fiction.
Hassum Ceesay, a noted and famous Gambian writer born in 1944 and died 2010, was a diplomat and international civil servant. He was one of the great Gambian authors and co-founder of Ndaanan literary magazine.
The Prize among other things aims to reward Gambia-based writers whose work have been published locally; to help build a writing and publishing culture in The Gambia. It also aims to inculcate and promote the culture of reading in The Gambia; honour the literary legacy of the late Hassum Ceesay, author and co-founder of Ndaanan literary magazine.
Hassum Ceesay Memorial Prize for Fiction award is once a year. This award is scheduled for 10th January 2017. The winners of the award will go home with cash prizes. First prize D20,000.00; second prize D10,000.00 and third prize is D7000.00.
According to the co-coordinator of the Prize, Hassoum Ceesay, also an author and historian, disclosed the submission standard. He said “Submission standards include: Works of fiction (prose, poetry, play) published in the form of a book in The Gambia from January 1st 2014 to December 31st 2016 and they are eligible; and authors will make the submission of one good copy of the entry.
He added that an author can submit or enter for three categories of play, prose and poetry at one time. “Entries should be submitted at The Gambia National Museum, Banjul on or before 31st December 2016”.
He thus invites and encourages Gambian writers and authors to participate.
