Interior Women Football Club were on Sunday crowned champions of the Women’s Curtain Raiser Final after defeating Abuko United by alone goal to nil. The game that was graced by the president of the Gambia Football Federation, football lovers and fans of both teams was played at the Serekunda East Mini-Stadium.
Abuko United, who were the last year’s league champions has shown a great performance but they could not restore purity as the lone goal defeat left both their managers and fans disappointed, while the last year’s FA Cup winners Interior took the crowned home with much fanfare.
As winners, the security female team went home with a giant trophy and a cash prize of D20, 000, while the runners up Abuko United pocketed home a consolation prize of D10, 000.
Speaking in an interview with reporters shortly after the match, the head coach of Interior FC Mariama Sowe congratulated her players for the victory, saying eventhough her side’s performance during the final was a bit disappointing.
“This was not supposed to be their playing style. You can see Abuko played us very well. If not that we have a good defensive, they could have won us but thank God we did our best and it pays dividend” she said.
For his part, the head coach of Abuko United, Yaya Fatty expressed happiness with his player’s performance despite the lose. “We lost the match but in football there must be a winner and a loser so we take it in good faith and go back to the drawing board and work on our weake points especially the goal scoring side.” Fatty noted.
Lamin Kabba Bajo, the president of Gambia Football Federation thanked people for coming out in their numbers to support the ladies.
According to him, people are now inculcating the spirit of football in them, saying he was impressed with the kind of performances that was exhibited by the two teams.
