The International Day of the Girl Child was recently commemorated in the Central River Region. The commemoration was graced by Technical Assistance Committee members of the region, school children and a cross section of the communities.
Addressing school children on behalf of the regional governor, the Deputy Governor Alhaji Malang Saibo Camara spoke on the significant and important role women play in the socio economic development of The Gambia. He said since the advent of the July 22nd Revolution under the dynamic leadership of President Jammeh, the government has put up a lot of initiatives to empower and involve women and children particularly the girl child in the development aspirations of the country.
“This government ensures that the dignity of women and children are respected and protected by coming up with a lot of policies and legal frameworks which includes but not limited to the following; establishment of the Ministry of Social Welfare, and Women’s Affairs under the Office of the Vice President, Girls Trust Fund, Women’s and Children Act, Law against Early Marriage and FGM,” he affirmed.
The regional education director of CRR, Ousman Bah highlighted the significance of the event, saying that a lot has been achieved in empowering women and the girl child in The Gambia. He called on the girls to make best use of the opportunities accorded to them.
He noted that since 1994, a lot of strides have been made to close the gender gap. He posited that since the establishment of the Girls Trust Fund, there are more girls in school than boys. He implored on parents to grab the opportunities and allow their girls to complete the basic cycle education in order to become productive citizens.
