Dembo Tamba, a Narcotic Officer at the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG) Monday testified as the fourth prosecution witness in a drug trial involving Modou Lamin Tiana, Sheriffo Wally and Bubacarr Demba before Magistrate Kebba Baldeh of Banjul Magistrates’ Court.
In his testimony, Tamba revealed that on 4th May 2015, he was on duty at their Kanifing camp and was assigned to bring the accused persons for weighing of the suspected drugs in Banjul.
He stated that the suspected cannabis was weighed in the presence of the accused persons and that it weighed 280gram. He said the result of the weighing was shown to the accused persons before they thumb-printed it and he (witness) signed it.
When the witness recognised the certificate through his signature when it was shown to him, Magistrate Baldeh marked it as an exhibit.
During cross-examination, the 1st accused person Modou Lamin Tiana maintained that he has denied ownership of the cannabis while on their way to Banjul but the witness said he was only assigned to escort the accused persons to Banjul to weigh the cannabis and nothing more.
The 1st accused further maintained that he was told by the witness that he was not the owner of the said cannabis but the witness said that was just a fabricated story.
The accused persons are accused of being found in possession of 280gms of Cannabis sativa, a prohibited drug on or about 28th April 2015 at New Yundum village.
The case is adjourned to Wednesday, 28th September.
