National Assembly Pays Respect to Deceased Lawmaker

Members of the National Assembly on Thursday paid their last respect to their former colleague Hon. Alasana Bojang at the National Assembly chambers in Banjul. Bojang, MP for Kombo East died at the Brikama Health Centre on Wednesday following a long illness.

The vice president and minister of Women’s Affairs, Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy represented the President His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh Babili Mansa. She extended her condolence to the bereaved family. She told the gathering that the late Hon. Bojang served his people and the country well thus the reason why the people of Kombo East elected him to serve them at the National Assembly.

Madam Njie-Saidy prayed for Allah the Almighty’s forgiveness on the soul of the late lawmaker, praying for Him to also grant those that Bojang left behind him long life and good health.

The funeral procession was also attended by senior government officials, cabinet ministers, members of the bereaved family, friends, governor of the West Coast Region, Ajaratou Siffai Hydara, amongst a host others.

In delivering his speech before the late Hon. Alasana Bojang’s coffin laid before lawmakers, the speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Abdoulie Bojang on behalf of the National Assembly members and support staff of the Assembly expressed their heartfelt sympathy and sorrow for the untimely demise of their former colleague.

“The late Hon. Bojang served The Gambia and the National Assembly chambers with immense diligence and respect to the people of Kombo East district,” Speaker Bojang told the gathering.

He added that during the late Hon. Bojang’s tenure as NAM for Kombo East, he served in several National Assembly select committees, key amongst them were: select committee on Local Government and Lands, Ombudsman and IEC, select committee on Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports and select committee on Trade, NEPAD, Regional Integration, among others.

The majority leader and member for Serekunda East, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta described the late Hon. Bojang as a humbled, respected and dedicated colleague. He said the late Bojang was full of delightful social characters, adding that the people of Kombo East bestowed their trust in him to represent them at the National Assembly in March 2012.

“We the members of the National Assembly extend our heartfelt condolence to His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh Babili Mansa and his entire cabinet for the demise of late Hon. Alasana Bojang,” he added.

The APRC liaison officer attached to West Coast Region, Hon. Mattar Kujabi of Foni Bondali and minority leader of the National Assembly, Hon. Samba Jallow, both described the late Bojang as someone who dedicated his entire life in serving his people. Describing the late Bojang as a true Muslim who devoted his life in the propagation of Islam, the duo expressed sympathy to his family, friends and the people of Kombo East during this difficult time.

Family members like Pa Sheriffo Bojang (the deceased’s stepfather), Chief Basiru Jarjue of Kombo East and Ebrima Ceesay Bojang (the deceased’s elder brother) all prayed for Allah the Almighty to give the deceased eternal rest in Jannah.

He was laid to rest on Thursday at 5pm in his native village of Pirang. The late Hon. Bojang is survived by a wife and children.
