A deadly accident yesterday claimed the lives of three people with a fourth hospitalised after sustaining serious facial injuries. The accident happened at a time when it was raining heavily and the road became slippery and as a result the driver of a Malian bus with registration number AV 2259 and a four-passenger Mercedes Benz taxi, with registration number BJL 1417 L, collided leading to the death of the trio on the spot.
The accident was so horrific that officers of The Gambia Fire and Rescue Services had to use hydraulic rescue tools to extricate Ousman Mbaye, the driver from the vehicle. The police have also confirmed that over-speeding by both drivers led to the deadly collision.
It is an open secret that over-speeding increases the likelihood of an accident. Very strong relationships have been established between speed and accident risk. Large speed differences at a road also increase the likelihood of an accident. In addition, drivers driving much faster than the average driver have a higher accident risk.
Speeding reduces the time you have to react and increases the likelihood of you having an accident. The faster you’re going, the harder it is to slow down. When you can’t slow down, you are risking the possibility of causing an accident.
Therefore, it is very important for drivers to drive carefully because the life they save may be their own. To avoid getting into such accidents, you need to account for yourself as a driver and for those around you, too. Not only will this lead to safer driving, but it can also save you time and unnecessary expenses.
No matter the condition of any road, it becomes slippery whenever it is wet, making the likelihood of accidents high. It is also important to obey the speed limit even if every other car is surpassing it.
