The First Family at the weekend led thousands of volunteers in the harvesting exercise on a vast maize farm cultivated in Kanilai as part of the launching of the Gambia is Green initiative pioneered by the First Lady Her Excellency Madam Zined Jammeh.
His Excellency the President has earned the reputation the world over, as a farmer president but there is something unique about this particular event. This is spearheaded by the First Lady in her increasing efforts to leave her footprint and legacy in all spheres of our national development. Now her efforts have led her to the agriculture sector as we edge closer towards the realisation of our food basket initiative.
As well as the objectives embedded in the Gambia is Green initiative, the weekend activities are expected to intensify efforts towards the attainment of the Vision 2016 food self-sufficiency initiative. We would therefore, like to commend the thousands of people who thronged the President’s farms in Kanilai to participate in the launching of the initiative. It demonstrated the people’s level of support and commitment to the development of this country.
Therefore, as we congratulate the First Family for the initiative, it is important to note that we are only helping ourselves. As well as its contribution to the attainment of food sufficiency, which is expected to end the decades-long importation of rice to The Gambia, the farms are expected to produce more than what we can consume, thus leaving more for exportation and in return contributing immensely to the foreign exchange earning of the country.
This will in turn lead to rapid economic growth, a diversified economy, a rational and productive agriculture, a good distribution of incomes and interventionist policies to assist people left behind in the process of economic growth. Go people, Let’s make Gambia Greener.
