On the Laminkoto-Passimas Road

We would like to commend the government of The Gambia for signing a US$ 61 million agreement for the construction of the critical Laminkoto-Passimas road.

The road, when completed, would support the economic and social development of the eastern region of the country by maximising its agricultural potential and enabling people to have easier and safer access to schools, and healthcare facilities.

The news is another clear manifestation of the leader of the great July 22nd Revolution for putting the interest of Gambians at heart by constructing good roads across the country. It comes just few months after we reported that the necessary finance required for the construction of the Sukuta-Jambanjelly road has been secured.

The importance of good roads cannot be overemphasised because it is a fact that reducing the distance between people, markets, and services is one of the catalysts of sustained economic growth.

Despite the advance in technology, a good and reliable transport network remains vital because there is a very strong positive connection between a country’s economic development and the quality of its road network.

National targets for growth and poverty reduction rely heavily on effective road transport. The inability to access jobs and services because of unimproved or expensive road network is an important element of social exclusion, which propels poverty.

A reliable and affordable road transport system also enables trade and employment opportunities in both urban and rural communities since it facilitates the movement of goods and services in all sectors of the economy.

Road infrastructure plays a key role in the socio-ßeconomic development of any country and as the people of the beneficiary communities stated, this is a project that every Gambian has been yearning for and when completed, it would improve the lives and livelihoods of the people in the eastern part of The Gambia.
