Police Officer Testifies in False Pretence Case

Sulayman Touray, police officer attached to Bundung police station last week testified as second prosecution witness in a false pretence case involving Lamin Jatta before Magistrate MSM Jallow of the Bundung Magistrates’ Court.

Jatta is accused of obtaining D350, 000 from one Haddy Barry by false pretence when he tried to sell a plot of land to her, which does not belong to him in the month of January 2016 in Sukuta.

In his testimony, the witness revealed that the complainant is currently on a mission in Sudan. He said he used to live with the complainant at the same police Barrack in Kotu in 2006, adding that the complainant had the opportunity to go for a mission in Sudan and upon coming for holiday in January 2016, she told him (witness) that he wanted to buy a land around the Greater Banjul Area.

According to the witness, he led the complainant to the accused person’s office at Fajara and later the accused showed her (complainant) two pieces of lands at Coastal Road. He said he and the complainant negotiated on a price with the accused person until they agreed on D350, 000.

The witness said the complainant made two separate payments to the accused in his (witness) presence. He said the accused had issued receipts to the complainant during the two payments bearing RPL Ventures Limited logo. He said accused transferred the disputed land to him (witness) before the complainant asks him to also transfer it to her Family. “This is all he knew about this case,” the witness concluded.

The matter was later adjourned to the 22nd of November for PW2 to be cross-examined.
