The Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh Babili Mansa has conferred national honours on over seven hundred people from various regions of the country and beyond, including ruling party loyalists and donors.
The event, forms part of celebrations marking the 22nd anniversary of the July 22nd Revolution, saw the various recipients decorated at a colourful ceremony held at the State House grounds in Banjul. The event was attended by the First Lady of the Islamic Republic of The Gambia, Her Excellency Madam Zineb Jammeh, Vice President, Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, Cabinet Ministers, the Chief Justice of The Gambia, and a cross section of Gambians and APRC militants as well as supporters.
The awards were in recognition of the immense contributions and roles the recipients continue to play in the country since the advent of the July 22nd Revolution 22 years ago.
The Vice President and Minister of Women’s Affairs, Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy addressed the gathering on behalf of the President and the National Coordinating Committee (NCC) of the Alliance for Patriotic Re-Orientation and Construction (APRC).
“It is with great honour and pride that I am accorded this opportunity to make a statement on such an auspicious occasion which witnessed the awarding of well earned and deserved medals in recognition of the tremendous contributions in national development over and beyond the simple and ordinary levels of commitment and call to national duty,” she said.
“From July 22nd 1994 to date, you have consistently demonstrated unalloyed loyalty to His Excellency the President of the Islamic Republic of The Gambia by the many various ways but very significantly through your commitment to the ideals and development orientation of the APRC across all sectors in particular, and in general the establishment.”
She continued: “Revolutions are made by men but carried forward by the committed multitude ready to sacrifice their brow and sweat in the many diverse ways that ensure and facilitate sustainable national development on the one hand, and on the other, act as and catalyse latent national human resources to become the next rung of patriotic citizens who shall not deviate from the cause. This is why it is very important that your persistent participation is used as a national platform for harnessing such vital human resource that is indispensable as a positive force in pushing ahead national development agenda. It will be completely amiss of me if I do not say that this occasion, is as important as it would not have come to fruition if it were not for its sanctioning by His Excellency. It is on this important score that I return many thanks and appreciation to him for allowing the occasion to hold and look forward to another occasion of this nature which should see more of your kind earning what you have deservedly earned. As I say so, please let me give one word of advice which is that you cannot relent but push more and more ahead such that the younger generation shall have no excuse not to emulate,” the VP enthused.
