The President of the Islamic Republic of The Gambia, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh, Babili Mansa, on day five of his nationwide tour last Friday, led the tour party in the harvesting the Vision 2016 rice farm at Pacharr in the Central River Region, few hours after performing the Friday prayers at Janjangbureh Mosque.
The Pacharr rice field is over three thousand hectares, part of which is being managed by smallholder farmers and coordinated by a rice growers’ association. They are involved in all-year-round production through tidal irrigation.
During his Vision 2016 tour in 2014, the President visited the site and proposed for an integrated farming system, which would involve rice production and aquaculture. That was described to be one of the food baskets of the country.
Last Friday’s harvesting exercise at the farm is believed to be a demonstration of the viability of the Vision 2016 agenda, which calls for Gambia to be rice self-sufficient.
